so this week has been really random and awesome. on wednesday I went to a christmas gathering/hang out at josiah and erica's new pad. when I arrived, I was met with the news that I was now in the video for the F.O.D. christmas song. I think the concept was awesome. here is the video that was released yesterday. i'm somewhere in there trying to steal beer from santa. but saint nick deserves it...for stealing our hearts....and our cookies.

election day 2008. it's finally here. things are beginning to look optimistic. I used to be a skeptic/conspiracy theorist. I haven't completely lost that trait, but I'm beginning to rethink that maybe there are actually genuine people out there that really are trying to better this nation. I know things will not change just because a candidate gets elected; it takes a whole country to bring about this change. I know it may seem cliché, but hey...maybe they're right. We all seem to be together on this day. Let's see what this country can do. did you vote?
Anyways, aside from everything.....did anyone check out that crazy hologram technology they were using on CNN? I was at the studio, when I was called into the next room to view what was dubbed: The Future. It was Wolf Blitzer talking with a woman from chicago who was in the same room as he was VIA HOLOGRAM TECHNOLOGY. Just like Star Wars. I tried taking a photo of it, but the camera on my phone was not in the mood to work (I think it was in shock at what it was seeing).
I never said anything about Halloween. It was no bueno. Here's a summary: Captain Kirk. Natural History Museum. Darker My Love/Nirvana. Entrance denied. RSVP loses meaning. Friends not wanting to wait. Jesus grants entry. Everyone leaving. Fail. So, in other words, it was a typical halloween. It seems to always end up like that every year. Plans typically don't end up the way you think they will. I think the 101 freeway that night was dressed up like the 101 during the day. traffic. oh well....

apparently no age almost walked out on performing on the late late show with craig ferguson. randy wore an obama shirt for the performance, but was asked to remove it because it "went against the fcc rule of equal time". he changed it, but the new shirt reads: "free health care". the show should air in about two weeks. no age on television. exciting.

so the dodgers beat the cubs. I'm kind of still on the fence on this one. I don't know whether to be excited or bummed. I was definitely looking forward to the cubs going all the way, but then again, there's a part of me that wanted to see LA go through to the series. It's kind of funny because I don't really get into sports until around playoffs. It's like skipping the dialogue and story line of Home Alone, just to watch the part where Macaulay Culkin actually sets up those traps around the house. You know that was the best part and the main premise. Post season is definitely where it's at.
My parents went to see Iron & Wine and the SwellSeason a couple of days ago, which was kind of random when I found out. I knew it was definitely something my dad wanted to see, but my mom? I remember back in high school I used to try to get her into music that I liked. She liked rilo kiley, but she never could remember their name. She referred to them as "that band with the girl you like." I don't know how my dad got her to go, but she did....and enjoyed it. She recently gave me her vinyl collection, which she had since she was a kid. It was like a time capsule filled with 60's pop music: from obscure, one hit wonders, hits, and spanish pop songs (which is kind of funny considering that she was only like ten when the 60's came to an end). With her being the type who isn't a real hardcore music listener, I was really thrilled when she handed over her records and introduced me to her favorite music as a youngster.

well...

so the f yeah fest came and went. I think it was a huge success; the line never got any shorter and the echo was always packed with people. I think I actually saw only five bands the whole day, which was kind of a bummer since there were so many great acts playing, but I still had a great time just hanging out with those at the fest and running around all over the place trying to find people. The scavenger hunt/show was also a success, even though the show was moved to another warehouse as a result of the 6th street warehouse getting shut down. I've never seen strike anywhere play, but I was real excited to see them play at the warehouse show since they were from Virginia. dan deacon flew in from Ireland to play that show too, so that was really cool of him to do. But really, I think the best part of the fest was gearing up for the actual day. The whole experience could be summed up with: Drives to Anaheim every other day to pick up flyers, posters, shirts, etc. for the fest. I'm really glad that part is over. Nevermind LA traffic, have you ever heard of OC traffic? Burritos. me, sean, donovan, anthony, and luis giving david liebe hart a ride home after the Radiohead show (weirdest night ever. maybe i'll write something about it in the future). Missing the drama that unfolded at the second Radiohead show the next day. hardcore kids at the dillinger escape plan show getting super stoked about hearing that dan deacon was playing the fest. "dude, he's playing!? it's going to be like summer camp!" vegan ice cream. Painting ping-pong balls for No Age's set. sean throwing those balls into the crowd during "Everybody's Down". realizing how sad it actually looked. Collectively agreeing that more balls should have been bought. re-discovering 7/11 slurpees with sandy, ben, and damien from Fucked Up (apparently there's no dr. pepper slurpees in canada). guitarist from yeah yeah yeahs getting asked to play the fest while simultaneously getting invited to go watch the fest. fugazi shows that were in the works. realizing that it's too late for the idea. downtown la at 3:30 in the morning. Keys that won't leave the ignition. microcosm publishing. etc. etc. There's so much more that went down, but yea, don't really want to type. Thanks to all that came out to the fest and to those that helped out. It was fun.
Also, I'm really happy to be lending a hand to these guys for the next few months. Hopefully everything works out with it. really really really excited.

Fireside post vol.4

rainer maria (1997):
a song from probably my favorite album ever. I can't really explain it, but Past Worn Searching has been with me for almost a decade just spinning away. I never actually liked the album at first, but something about it just resonated with me. I guess it was a high school thing/trying to identify with something. I don't know. But still, this album gives me chills every time I listen to it.

already starting...

so the f yeah fest starts tomorrow, I think we're ready. The amazing people from the band, Fucked Up, have been staying at the f yeah "headquarters" since they came down from Canada. I'm really looking forward to seeing them play.
Though today's gathering consisted of preparing sets and props for the fest and for the No Age set, it seemed that something bad was bound to happen. it did.
So the guys from The Strange Boys had just arrived after driving from Austin, Texas. They stopped at a house on sunset and vermont to gather some things. All the guys went inside the house except for Ryan (their singer). He ends up getting mugged at gunpoint, which resulted in them getting their keys, cellphones, and money stolen from them. Everyone is alright, but it sucks that this happened to them. I think they'll be staying at headquarters too, which would probably be safer. If anyone goes to the fest, go see them and make them smile. They are a really really good band. harmonica! It's going to be an insane day. I need sleep.

No Age/Mika Miko/Abe Vigoda @ the Smell from Anthem Magazine on Vimeo.
this was a pretty fun show. I just recently found this video from the 2nd annual pancake breakfast show at the smell, which took place in early June. I had gone to this with luis, bobby, and theo and thought we would never make it. I had missed the first one they had last year, so I had to at least make this one. Luis can be seen quite a bit in the video, which he's probably unaware of... I remember at one point bobby was talking with dean in the alley about their show at the Chain Reaction the day before (which can be seen here/and yes, all the people who you can see is just about everyone that was in attendance.), and then Dean responding with: "the venue is anaheim? that place is like chuck e. cheese." (if you've been to the chain you would understand). But yea, it's absolutely refreshing and great to see such a positive community coming from the streets of LA. It seems to be spreading. the rest of that day was pretty hectic too, which consisted of being attacked by pigeons (rats with wings), extreme heat, trying to find tim who was lost at the coliseum, getting lost at the coliseum, trying to find time to study for finals, stray cats in echo park, bad jokes....
So no age, abe vigoda, and mika miko will all be playing the F Yeah Fest on August 30th. If you missed them at the smell, then this would be a great opportunity to see them. it's late, the olympics are on, I'm still recovering from sun poisoning...good night. Go here: http://www.fyeahfest.com

help out

so at the end of this month, the 5th F Yeah Fest will commence. as you may, or may not have heard, the fest kind of took a huge hit financially. bands that many people thought were supposed to be playing the fest had to be turned down because of the hit. Among those bands were converge, murder city devils, denali, and dillinger four. Instead of canceling the entire fest (which was supposed to be held at a state park), a decision was made to continue on with it in Echo Park and to convert it into a one day event with additional activities occurring around Los Angeles the same weekend. You can check out all the info at http://www.fyeahfest.com.
Also, a huge show is being held at the 6th Street Warehouse in downtown Los Angeles (off of Alameda). It is going to be a benefit show for the F Yeah Fest. All donations will be used by the Fest to pay off some debt and to make sure that the Fest will be around for the future. The show is on Tuesday (August 12), it will be epic. See you there. so I ended up walking out on a gig I was supposed to play as the National League; it sucks that it ended up being this way, but it really needed to be done. backyard/house shows can be really fun, but when there's bad vibes....maybe it was never meant to be. sorry. hopefully there will be better organized shows in the future that don't occur spontaneously. thank you to those who were helpful in trying to find some amps for me to play out of, and to those who asked about the band (but mostly because they had no idea why I was there. apparently I wasn't scheduled). nice.

epic

so my house is in a M83 video..kinda, which is still sweet. The beginning of the video takes place/was filmed on the Cal State L.A./L.A. County High School for the Arts campus, which is visible from my house. The two opening shots of the neighborhood is the view from the school/s. my house can be seen in the second shot (with the title showing); it's the house the furthest to the right with a kind of a white/blue color. I remember when I was younger, I used to look at that same view and try to find my house, so when the video started playing I immediately recognized the area. You can also see the house of Beatles producer Phil Spector, which is hidden in the first opening shot. It's located all the way to the left where all those tall trees are in the background....Also, the girl in the video plays drums in the L.A. band, BlackBlack, who are really neat. craziness.
